Brain Tissue Loss Connected to Hearing Loss

There are many reasons for hearing loss and it is something that millions of Americans deal with on a daily basis. Sometimes environmental circumstances lead to hearing loss  and sometimes physiological factors can impact our hearing. Either way, knowing the facts and how you can benefit from the products and guidance of our audiologists can help make those important decisions that we all hope never to face but many of us will.

A recent article from Medical Press links hearing loss with brain tissue loss; and the shrinkage noted has been found to be “fast-tracked” in older adults with hearing loss according to a study from the researchers from Johns Hopkins and the National Institute on Aging. As many other studies have found, hearing loss is related to a growing list of health consequences, including increased risk of dementia, falls, hospitalizations, and diminished physical and mental health overall.

This specific study used information from the ongoing Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging to compare brain changes over time between adults with normal hearing and adults with impaired hearing. They concluded that the structures that process information from sound tended to be smaller in size in people and animals with impaired hearing. We need a plan to examine whether treating hearing loss early can reduce the risk of associated health problems. Audiologists believe this is the case and addressing hearing loss needs to start early. We can help diagnose and treat your hearing issues so that you feel better and reduce the risk of other health impairments that hearing loss  has been associated with. When it comes to your brain, your health should come first. Don’t let it wait any longer! Contact one of our audiologists today and improve the quality of your life tomorrow.
